DJ Lights – Top Tips and Advice For Choosing DJ Lighting Equipment and Party Disco Lights

Author: admin  //  Category: Top DJ's

DJ Lighting Equipment is a very important aspect of any disco equipment setup and one which should not be overlooked or underestimated. However, once you have a good idea of the available options you will find that it is relatively easy to equip yourself with some great lighting solutions at affordable prices.

There are many types of DJ lights available and they differ greatly in price point so it is a good idea to plan out your requirement and understand that if you only ever do small or sometimes medium sized venues then you will NOT need a massive amount of lights or a big lighting rig as these may only get used a few times a year. In fact it may be more realistic and beneficial to buy a few good effect lights, a couple of moving head scanners, a laser and a smoke machine and on the rare occasion that you may require more lighting then you can always hire a few more lights from your local DJ warehouse.

If you are a newbie to disco lighting then you should gain a little more knowledge through reading the next part of this article which gives you the options for choosing DJ lights and lighting packages.

1) Moonflower Lights (Gobo) – This light produce patterns through the lens and can be very effective.

2) Scanners – Available as Fixed and Moving Head lighting units and these are probably the most popular and used the most throughout the mobile disco and nightclub scene. A scanner DJ light can be linked to one another, in a daisy chain, and attached to a lighting controller (DMX controller unit) and the linked units will work as a synchronised effect.

3) DJ Laser Lights – A laser light produces either fixed pattern effect in single or multi colours (requires multiple heads) and the more advanced units can produce some amazing animations which are typically controlled via a laptop running a DMX interface.

4) DJ Black Lights and UV Lights – These produce fluorescent and black light effects such as making any white clothing you wear stand out brightly. These Black Lights are perfect for mobile disco, home and bedroom, and nightclubs.

5) Party Disco Lights – These lights are widely available and offer an affordable solution to house parties, small disco’s and other light applications. You can buy a complete Disco Party Pak from online DJ suppliers and these can turn any small venue into a flashy, colourful and atmospheric party palace.

There are many more options available including light boxes and LCD display panels, strobe lighting and Beacons also Oil Gobo Lights to name but a few. However, the main items listed above (1 to 5) are by far the most widely used lighting equipment and if you opt for a combination of those lights then you will not go far wrong.

Prices For A Wedding DJ – Don’t Let Price Be Your Only Factor

Author: admin  //  Category: Top DJ's

Prices for a wedding DJ come in at anywhere from $500-$3000. Your pricing for your wedding DJ also depends on if they charge per hour and others have a flat rate. When trying to find the right DJ for your wedding day you want to make sure the DJ has experience with the kind of wedding you are having.

The price might be within your budget but he does not play the type of music you are looking for at your wedding. It’s a good idea to find a DJ that either specializes in weddings or has a lot of experience with weddings. The last thing you want is a DJ that plays the wrong kind of music at your wedding.

Its also a good idea to interview at least three DJ’s and also collect references from each before you make your pick. You might find you like one DJ but the price is not within your budget. In that case you will have two others to choose from. Some DJ’s factor their price based on their reputation and will charge more than the average wedding DJ.

If money is not an option you can do a little more research about this dj and see if he will meet your needs. Its also a good idea to see how long the individual or company has been around, the last thing you want is a fly by night person that you cannot find on the day of your wedding.

Don’t forget to also check with family and friends to see if they know of any wedding DJ’s personally. You might be able to get a discount from a good referral.

DJ Beginner – 3 Tips to the Top

Author: admin  //  Category: Top DJ's

I remember eight years ago when I first decided to get fully involved in DJing. There were a
number of things that were going through my head at the time. A few concerns and thoughts
were things like… “How do I raise cash for this hobby?”, “How am I going to learn how to
use the equipment?”, “How will I promote myself as a DJ?” etc etc… In this article I want
to talk about 3 tips for the DJ beginner and what they need to know to succeed as a DJ.

So lets talk about the these tips and what they can do for you to make it to the top.

Tip 1. Have a broad knowledge of music!

This is especially true if you are looking to get work outside of a particular niche and go
all out universal. By going Universal, you have more opportunities for work in different
areas whether its DJing at weddings, 21st birthday parties, Product launch events or
whatever! I’m not saying you have to pick up on this point, its just good to have a broad
knowledge of music.

Tip 2. Identify an image for yourself

What I mean by this is create a brand for yourself. Create an image that reflects your music.
The more you can do this the more sell able you make yourself and the more professional you
will present yourself in front of music promoters, record labels etc. You wont be consider as
the average Joe DJ that comes in and plays music. Branding yourself with create buzz and
professionalism for you.

Tip 3. Don’t stay out to late.

It is very common these days for DJ’s in certain niches of music to stay out late after they have done their job in the club. This is especially true for DJ’s who play in the dance music genre. It is all too easy for a DJ to find themselves approached by someone inviting them back to an after party. If you do this you will end up burning yourself out very quickly and this will have a damaging effect on you. So its advised to take this tip seriously if you are a beginner DJ. Believe me, experience has taught me so!

These are just a few tips I wanted to share with you if you are a beginner DJ. I hope you take these into account.

How to Hire a Really Good DJ

Author: admin  //  Category: Top DJ's

I’ve noticed these days that just about every bride hires a DJ to handle music at the wedding reception (and sometimes at the ceremony). I’m sure part of that trend has to do with convenience. What most brides don’t realize is that deciding on a DJ goes beyond the question, “Who should I have playing music for my guests?” It is one of the most critical choices on a bride’s list of arrangements for wedding-day service providers. (For brides who prefer to hire live musical entertainment for their events, this applies to band leaders of orchestras, as well.)

A good DJ can smoothly guide the flow of your ceremony or reception, and keep your guests involved and entertained. A bad DJ can ruin the entire event. A great DJ can dazzle your guests and at the same time help to seamlessly coordinate the work of everyone operating behind the scenes, turning your reception into the most fabulous party of the season.

A DJ (short for Disc Jockey) is unquestionably your MC (short for Master – or Mistress – of Ceremonies). They sit in the control seat: They have the microphone, and they are the focal person in the hall. From there they can alert people like caterers, videographers and photographers to be ready for whatever is happening next at your event; they can keep your guests informed and happy and they can field any requests your guests might have for special music. A masterful DJ literally can be a bride’s best friend at the reception.

As with any friend, you need to choose wisely. Do some thinking before you draw up your list of DJ candidates. First, consider who you will invite to your event, and what kind of atmosphere you want. If your family and friends tend to be somewhat reserved, then hiring a flamboyant, over-the-top DJ would be a mistake. Someone generating that kind of high-voltage personality might repel your group from the dance floor, rather than attract them to it.

On the other hand, if you have a raucous entourage of people who love to party, then you don’t want a DJ whose style is to keep the music playing, keep your events running like clockwork, and generally keep the ship on an even keel. Your friends and family may hang back, waiting for the DJ to get into the party spirit and rev up the action to the level of excitement they prefer. It could be a long wait. Here is a checklist to help you select the best DJ for your occasion: Verify that the behind-the-mike personality of your DJ is a good match for the group personality of your guests. Make sure the DJ enjoys working with your other support people (such as caterers and videographers) because that is a vital part of the job. Make sure the DJ has the right equipment in their studio to bring to your event: Enough audio gear and lighting gear to cover the needs of the hall and the demands of your schedule. Is the DJ is willing to play the kind of music you enjoy, and has plenty of the appropriate songs in their collection? Are you comfortable enough with the DJ that you can trust them make judgment calls on what songs to play at certain times (even songs that may not be on your list), in order to liven up the party?)

You’re the expert on what the crowd at your party will be like; the DJ should be your expert on getting the event moving and keeping it going. For that to work, you both need to share your expertise. Be wary of a DJ who seems to have all the answers – even before you ask a question. A good DJ will want to spend time talking with you so that they can prepare to do the best job possible. Remember to let your disc jockey or band leader know you expect them to help coordinate the work of your other support people, like the videographer and the photographer. If that seems like a new idea to them, then you should look elsewhere.

As a wedding professional, I always contact the DJ before a wedding just to make sure we get off to a good working relationship. I let them know that I appreciate what they’ll be providing at the reception, and that I’ll be relying on them for a heads-up if any part of an event is starting before I am ready. It always helps, but what I’ve found is that the great DJs are the ones who call me before I get a chance to call them. They know their job – all phases of it – and they can’t wait to get started. It’s a pleasure to work with those professionals. That is the kind of mastery you want in the person directing your reception ceremony music.

DJ Tricks – 3 Top DJ Tricks

Author: admin  //  Category: Top DJ's

DJ’s that like to perform tricks are always on the look out for new tricks and techniques to
perform. If done correctly, DJ tricks can be look and sound very impressive indeed! In this
article we will talk about 3 DJ tricks you can learn and implement at your own will.

DJ trick 1 – How to play a record backwards.

This trick is more suited to a vestax PDX-A2. What you need to do is take an ashtray a little thicker than the cartridge on your turntable or deck and position it upside down & centered on the slipmat of the turntable. Take a piece of sticky gum and stick a record centered on top of the ashtray, what the gum does is it helps hold it in place. Flip the cartridge upside down and then screw it back onto the tonal arm. You need to also weight the tonal arm so that it has the tendency to spring upward instead of down. When you have that done, start the record and slide the tonal arm underneath the record as far as you can towards the ashtray and it will play your record backwards. Its a pretty cool trick when you get it working.

DJ trick 2 – Add your own drum record

The second trick you need to do is have a record playing on one deck and set the tonal arm on the beginning or the end of the record where no music is written. Then have the record
stopped and tap on the record with your finger. What happens is the vibration from your
tapping on the record will sound like a base beat. Just tap in beat with the other record to
fatten up the base or add your own percussive touch. Its tough to get it first off but with
practice you’ll be good at it eventually!

DJ Trick 3 – Use two of the same records to achieve a reverb or delay effect.

This trick is pretty popular and I’ve seen lots of DJ’s work this off to a “T”. What you need
to do for this trick is take two records of the same song and get them in beat with each
other. You want to make sure that the songs are literally over laid exactly on top of each
other. So… assuming that you have that in order, take the base out of the record that you
are about to mix in and bring the track in. Once this is done, slowly blend the pitch very
delicately and you will start to hear a reverb effect! For the delay effect all you need to
do repeat the procedure except slip the record out of beat and then fade in and out for a
delay effect.

There you have it. 3 cool DJ tricks for you to get cracking on! You may not get these at
first, but practice makes perfect. Now go get em DJ!

DJ Software

Author: admin  //  Category: Top DJ's

Until the turn of the century, deejays were considered well equipped if they simply used DJ turntables, cartridges, CD Players and mixers. However, DJ equipment has evolved and undergone considerable development to meet modern entertainment needs. To improve sound effects and create more variety in music, manufacturers have developed modern disc jockey software. DJ software are powerful, versatile and user-friendly appliances that can be used to mix beats and rhythms. Installation of this software is easy and helps creating superior beats and new tunes. They are commonly used in studios to produce top quality music, including remix versions of older songs.

DJ software eliminates the need to invest in expensive DJ equipment to create desired tunes and beats. The software is used to develop and experiment with new DJ techniques without the use of turntables, dual CD players or mixers. Some DJ software are helpful in mixing MP3 files, by the use of multiple sound cards. They allow users to adjust pitch and tempo for each file individually. Software may contain graphic equalizers and spectrum analyzers. DJ software typically have a file navigator service that helps users locate particular sound tracks from a huge database in a quick and efficient manner.

While using DJ software, users need to plug in their headphones and listen to any other sound card that may be played or mixed subsequently. DJ software displays all supported file types along with extra information to help users preview other files simultaneously. Apart from mixing two tracks, it also allows DJs to listen to created sounds and adjust it before actually playing a particular song or rhythm.

A major benefit of using DJ software over traditional resources is the elimination of carrying a bulky music collection for every event. It is problematic for DJ’s to transport large numbers of CD’s physically because of the possibility of losing disks. Apart from this, carrying bulky equipment can be risky and expensive. With the help of modern DJ software, deejays only need to carry a laptop and connect it to an efficient speaker system to produce great music and enliven up an event.
